Condo and High-Rise Moves in Surrey

Moving into or out of a house is fairly straightforward: back the truck up to the driveway and get to work. Moving into or out of a condo in Surrey is a different kind of project entirely, and it’s one of the most common places where an otherwise well-planned move day goes sideways — not because of anything the movers did, but because of a building rule nobody checked in advance.

With more high-rise towers going up across City Centre, Guildford, and Newton every year, condo and strata moves are only becoming more common in Surrey. Here’s what tends to trip people up, and how to plan around it. If you’re comparing quotes from Surrey movers for a condo move specifically, it’s worth asking upfront how familiar they are with strata booking requirements — buildings with tight elevator windows genuinely go smoother with a crew that’s done it before.

The Elevator Booking Nobody Remembers Until It’s Too Late

This is, by a wide margin, the single most common condo moving mistake. Most Surrey high-rises — especially the larger towers in Whalley/City Centre and Newton — require you to formally reserve a service elevator for a specific time window, sometimes one to two weeks in advance.

Skip this step, and there’s a real chance your movers show up on schedule only to find the elevator already booked by another resident, or restricted to a passenger elevator too small for large furniture.

Certificates of Insurance

Many strata buildings won’t let a moving company through the door without a Certificate of Insurance (COI) naming the strata corporation as an additional insured party for your move date.

This isn’t optional paperwork — it’s usually a hard requirement, and it typically needs to be submitted a few business days ahead of time, not handed over on the morning of your move. A moving company that regularly works in strata buildings will usually handle sending this directly to your property manager, which is one less thing to track down yourself.

Damage Deposits

It’s common for Surrey strata buildings to require a refundable damage deposit before a move-in or move-out — often somewhere in the range of a couple hundred dollars, though it varies by building.

This covers potential scuffs to hallways, elevators, or lobby walls during the move. Ask your property manager how and when it’s refunded, since some buildings return it automatically after an inspection, while others require you to request it back.

Move-In and Move-Out Windows

Don’t assume you can move any day, any time. Many Surrey strata buildings restrict moves to weekdays during business hours, with no moving allowed on evenings, weekends, or holidays.

If your ideal moving day happens to fall on a Saturday, it’s worth checking your building’s bylaws before you lock in a date with your movers — rebooking around a building’s restrictions is a lot easier before the truck is packed than after.
